Scam Hunters Episode No. 3: Everybody’s Got a System

If you aren’t caught up, make sure to check out the previous episodes of Scam Hunters!

This episode starts with Ezra “joking” about hacking a hospice—a move that immediately puts cautious journalist Heidi on edge. Ezra assures her he’ll keep his “white hat” on. (White hat hacking is otherwise known as ethical hacking or penetration testing.)

They explore the digital footprint and potential vulnerabilities of both the hospice and thrift shop. When the focus shifts to the local thrift shop, that’s when things start to get interesting. Ezra ropes Heidi into a live, real-world “hack,” where she must go into the shop and investigate the shop’s outdated systems and potential vulnerabilities in person. In typical Ezra fashion, things quickly veer into absurd territory.

When Heidi poses as a potential donor, she meets Trevor, the store’s tech-savvy employee, and Patricia, the manager. That’s when Heidi learns the shop is subsidized by a church but all donations go towards the hospice… Sunflower Hospice.

While in conversation, Trevor lets a potential clue slip out and Ezra and Heidi realize they may have another suspect or two to investigate. Could the thrift store’s system have bigger flaws than they initially suspected? And could Trevor or Patricia have anything to do with this?

To find out more, listen to the full episode, where Ezra and Heidi get closer to unraveling the mystery—and subscribe to see what shocking twists lie ahead.
